i love when even baten kaitos npcs are confused about how their world works
i like it when people think i’m younger than i actually am because it’s like yes. yes i have fooled you. you think i look young but in reality i am not and have been alive for several centuries. i am centuries old. i am immortal. and i’ve fooled you

other thoughts that have run through my head: maybe wiseman is some sort of godcraft himself? or an evil high-powered self-aware heartflask?
speaking of wiseman and the dark brethren, my dad used to have some sort of head canon that they were in cahoots with each other. working together to cause the war of the gods so wiseman would have plenty of hearts to eat, or something like that. unfortunately i don’t remember anymore and i doubt he does either.
i’ve also wondered if wiseman and the children of the earth had an alliance. otherwise why would they refrain from interferring when wiseman was running around promagnating entire villages, but the moment malpercio started taking lives they decided to step in? was promagnation not truly as bad as seph and the others made it out to be? were the children of the earth scared of wiseman but not malpercio?? ?????? ??????
It’s not so much “test tube babies” and more “absorb the essence of (nonconsenting) people everywhere when you talk to them so you can use it to create a new life”
wow, yeah, the heartflask becomes a loooot shadier when described like that.
i think the brethren exists in ewatlo tbh. as we know the malpercios had a deal with them that was “once we’ve defeated wiseman you can do whatever you want with us” and since sagi kills mr evil parrot malpy in ewatlo is probably brethren-controlled
hey, this is that one theory that ties into your plague head canon! O uO
did you ever post that by the way? it’s really cool and i like it a lot ahaha /fangirls
now i’m wondering what would have happened had wiseman not been killed. and is this wiseman from a thousand years ago we’re talking about or verus-wiseman? and does wiseman have to be killed specifically by one of the malpercibros for the pact to be upheld? does sagi killing him only count because marno is with him?
also how the heck does wiseman stay more-or-less alive for one thousand years and why does he stop wandering once he finds verus of all people. verus probably has a heart like an old raisin COME ON
at the risk of making this post longer, my response is under a read more~
I think the biggest issue is continuity between EWatLO and BKO, and the fact that a prequel was made the sequel. Obviously, there are a lot of loopholes that we can’t account for, and I can’t exactly prove that the Dark Brethren were in EWatLO, like you say.
I made a stretch in my thinking, and I need to remind myself not to get my headcanon caught up in real canon. But I always thought that Malpercio was like an extension of their existence considering that the Brethren are partly responsible for Malpercio’s existence, in that they provided the power and “own the siblings souls” in a sense. And where did all of his minions in Cor Hydrae come from? Did they just spawn from the dark crater of nowhere (well, they might have, actually)? It just always made more sense to me that these are Dark Brethren, though they may not be the same DB that existed 1000 years ago. Creatures change and adapt and yadda yadda. They might go under a different name, but the breed might be similar. I really ought to write a bigger thing on this because I do need to organize my thoughts.
Unfortunately there’s a lot in canon that isn’t elaborated on between the relationship between the DB and Malpercio and that’s mostly because the DB came into existence in the second game, and I’m not sure if they were ever on the mind of the writers/designers when the first game was made. Continuity issues come up, unfortunately, which sucks but there’s not much I can do about it.
tl;dr- I fucked up and put in too much headcanon I have too many thoughts about the DB sorry ;;
But I really enjoyed the list that was compiled! BK has some dark shit, but I’ve always liked that. The world’s not always rainbows and sunshine. Except when you’re on Anuénué, but then you’ve got the haunted library and the never-ending jungle.
hahaha, sorry for the long posts. maybe i should start tagging them #long post for people who want to skip them?
no, you’re probably right about the relationship between the dark brethren and malpercio in ewatlo. that may well be what the devs intended. in trying to avoid retconning too much of ewatlo’s malpercio canon, they created a mysterious group whose presence in ewatlo wouldn’t be missed, since it isn’t accounted for in sagi’s time either. and they left clues connecting the two, like the similarities between cor hydrae and zaurak keep, as well as rudra’s (the dark brother fought by seph and co.) apparent ability to “travel betwixt multiple dimensions,” which could explain how zaurak keep/cor hydrae made it to another dimension.
you definitely should write more on the topic, i would love to hear what you have to say! i don’t think i’ve seen the dark brethren really discussed in-depth by fandom yet. personally, i usually ragequit because of how little canon tells us about them. (same with verus… and wiseman… you don’t like telling us about important enemies, do you, origins?)
thanks! reminds me of a something i heard once about why final fantasy 9 is more heartfelt a tragedy than, say, final fantasy 7. (i could be mis-remembering this quote, and i haven’t played ff9 so i don’t know how true it is… but you know what i mean, right?) in a nutshell, ff9 includes scenes that show its characters being happy and having fun times together, while ff7 is Serious Business much of the way through. the effect being that one game’s darkness is more tragic for its light, while the other seems melodramatic and depressing just for the sake of it.
which is kind of how i feel about baten kaitos and why i think it’s a good series.
since we’re all uploading good tracks from BK series
mmMMM GRL U STARTED YO PERIOD AHAHA NOW U THE DUTCHY OF THE CALBRENS PRAISE SATAN
The stalker letters. Hell, so many of the magnus descriptions are creepy as fuck. THE HEARTFLASK
and i didn’t include stuff like the heartflask and kalas&fee’s test tube births because, while unquestionably creepy, they don’t strike me as particularly… bleak? or harrowing? i guess they could fit under the umbrella of “questionable” though! especially since not only is research concerning the (re-)creation of life after magnus entrapment forbidden in the bk universe, but using technology to create artificial human life is also taboo in our own world.
tbh what made the terrorist attacks in greater mintaka memorable was that the player was present when it happened and was forced to help people who were injured in the blast by fetching supplies
also, implications of ableism and discrimination with kalas’ wings
also memorable in that sagi unwittingly befriended the terrorist not long after. jrpgs, everyone!
oh, that’s a good one! i mean it only wrecked kalas’ sense of self worth and caused him to become the white-winged darkness in order to feel complete, in the process of which triggering bk’s version of the apocalypse. nbd.
i think you got one wrong, the one with the cujam people, it wasn’t malpercio…
which means you completely forgot wiseman, wtf is that thing?!
hmm, well… i sort of disagree? i discussed this with katana a bit and we came to the conclusion that the deaths of the citizens of cujam were kind of a two part process. wiseman got to them first, either promagnating them or brainwashing them, rendering them husks of their former selves.
then, as malpercio, seph and co. meet them on the battlefield of atria, and kill their corporeal bodies so they can reach wiseman and slay him once and for all with their
shiny dark new powers.
so it’s kind of a two parter. wiseman takes their minds and malpercio takes their lives.
History was always horrible and the BK-verse is really no different. I’m not totally shocked to see this much dark/questionable content in such a game with a rich foundation for a history likely full of wars and lots of stuff we aren’t told about in canon.
• The Dark Brethren! We don’t know much about them, but holy fuck they were just chillin’ out on the other side of the Age of the Gods continent. They were always there and always seemed to be interested in the world, and their role in the whole Malpercio thing is especially important to note. When they came back in EWatLO they were likely seeking dominion of the world through the means of Malpercio and Mélodia as well! That, or its destruction in order to get dominion. Whatever works.
• Corellia’s supposed means of immortality. Or are those weird husk things in the Celestial Tree (BKO) not shaped like her… this is more questionable than dark, really.
• We used the power of friendship to summon the dark god- praise it
• Just Wiseman. Do I have to say more.
I’ll think of more later but I hope these all fit as well.
you’re right, the dark brethren totally deserve a spot of their own on the list! hmmm you brought up something pretty interesting though. by saying that they were probably seeking dominion of the world through the means of malpercio and melodia, do you mean to imply that the dark brethren were directly controlling malpercio and, consequently, melodia?
1. THAT’S A REALLY COOL IDEA
2. …how would it work though? there is no evidence that the dark brethren are still around by the time of ewatlo, aside from cor hydrae, which is either a renovated version of their old home with a new name in a different dimension, or an entirely separate location from zaurak keep. unless you argue that the dark brethren imbued malpercio with a destructive impulse at the same time as they did the sketchy evil god powers, and that by ewatlo almost all traces of seph and the others have faded away and now malpercio is motivated by these vestigial compulsions alone. so malpercio would technically be “controlled” by the dark brethren… who may or may not even still exist.
anyway, thank you so much for your response!
IIIIII ASSUME YOU MEAN ORIGINS GELDO unless you don’t in which case i’ll draw you ewatlo geldo
